This fall, we’re back in all four Chapel Hill-Carrboro middle schools, introducing incoming 6th graders to architecture through our Exploring Architecture workshops. So far, we’ve reached 356 students and we're about halfway through our series for the semester.
In each workshop, students learn that architecture isn’t just about buildings, it’s about imagination, function, and community. We start by talking together about what architecture is and how it shapes the world around us. Then we look at examples of inspiring spaces from across the globe, and students get to dream up their own designs.
Working in teams, they build with LEGO bricks - creating structures that range from parks to skyscrapers to whole neighborhoods. We ask them to think about the setting, purpose, and special features of their creations: What is this space used for? Who belongs here? What makes it unique?
After the workshop, we bring pictures of their LEGO models and written ideas back to the studio, combine them using an AI rendering tool, and share conceptual images that reflect their imagined creation. The process helps students see their ideas come to life and understand that design is a form of storytelling - one that connects creativity with community.
It’s always inspiring to watch 6th graders step into this role for the first time… to see them realize that they can shape the spaces around them, and that their ideas belong in the conversation about what our built environment can become.
The Exploring Architecture Workshops are made possible through the support of the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Public School Foundation.
