What if the next generation of urban designers, architects, and changemakers is already sitting in today's classrooms?

After five workshops and engagement with 105 brilliant students at Smith Middle School, we know the answer: they are.

Through Prism Design Lab's Sustainable Architecture & Urban Design program, students explored the possibilities of creating healthier, more resilient, and more equitable communities. Over the course of the workshops, they thought critically about the built environment and imagined how cities can better serve both people and the planet.

Through hands-on activities with LEGO bricks, collaborative design exercises, and creative problem-solving, students developed urban design concepts rooted in green technology, resilient infrastructure, and community-centered planning.

They asked thoughtful questions about sustainability. They explored solutions to real-world challenges. Most importantly, they demonstrated that age is no barrier to innovation.

From reimagining public spaces to incorporating environmentally conscious design strategies, these young designers approached each challenge with curiosity, empathy, and bold ideas for the future.

At Prism Design Lab, we believe design education empowers students to see themselves as active participants in shaping their communities. By introducing young people to architecture and urban design early, we help them understand that the places where we live, learn, and play can be redesigned to create a better future.

Our experience at Smith Middle School reinforced a conviction we hold deeply: the future of sustainable design is already taking shape.

And it looks a lot like 105 middle school students with big ideas and the confidence to bring them to life.
